Types of Paternity Tests Available to You in Florida
Your paternity test options include prenatal and postnatal testing.
Generally speaking, prenatal testing is more expensive and carries a small risk of miscarriage. Because of this, prenatal testing can be expensive and is usually not performed without doctoral consent. Amniocentesis and Chronic Villus Sampling (CVS) are two of the most common types of prenatal testing.
Amniocentesis is performed by inserting a small needle into the woman’s abdomen to collect amniotic fluid. This fluid contains the baby’s DNA and can be used to identify the child’s parents. CVS testing can be performed as early as the 10th week of pregnancy. During this procedure, a doctor inserts a thin needle or tube into the mother’s vagina and through her cervix to collect small pieces of tissue from the uterus. This tissue is called “chorionic villi” and contains the baby’s DNA.
Postnatal DNA paternity tests involve no known risk of injury to the mother or child. Generally speaking, postnatal paternity tests are less expensive than prenatal testing because they are less complicated. According to the American Pregnancy Association, paternity tests usually cost between $400 and $2,000.
