One of the leading causes of injury in the United States is car accidents. Because car accidents are often avoidable occurrences, this is a tragic reality. In just one year’s time in Florida, recent statistics state that there were a total of more than 235,000 traffic crashes and nearly 2,500 fatalities resulting from those collisions. These crashes are caused by a wide array of factors. The most common contributing factor to all Florida traffic collisions is driver negligence.
Florida has one of the highest accident rates in the nation. From 2010 to 2012, traffic crashes in our state have increased 23.4%. In 2012, there were 281,340 traffic accidents, 130,902 of them were injury crashes and 2,255 were fatal crashes.
An unfortunately high number of these crashes involved intoxication – 17,258 were labeled “alcohol related or suspected alcohol crashes.” Even more crashes involved teen drivers – 34,341 total crashes in 2012. These statistics are for the entire state of Florida. In St. Lucie County specifically, there were 2,563 traffic crashes in 2012.
Car accidents can be the result of many circumstances. Some common traffic collision factors are listed below:
Florida is 1 of only 12 states in the U.S. that operates by no-fault auto insurance laws. In contrast to tort auto insurance, no-fault requires each driver to collect compensation for accidents from their own insurance company. Florida requires something called personal injury protection or “PIP insurance” which provides up to $10,000 for medical expenses after an accident, regardless of which driver was at fault. Insurance companies must pay claimants within 30 days after the accident.
No fault doesn’t mean that your car accident cannot be resolved through litigation. Many car accident victims do file claims to recover more money for the accident, for example, when insurance does not cover the total cost of accident expenses.
